- How is a student identified as an EL (English Learner) student?
- When a parent/guardian comes in to register a student for school, they must fill out a packet of documents. One of the documents is called an HLS (Home Language Survey). There are only 2 questions in several different languages: "Is there a language other than English spoken in the home, and if so, which language?" and "Does the student speak a language other than English, and if so, which language?" If the parent/guardian answers yes to either question, the student is flagged in the system and will take a screener to determine if he/she needs EL services.
- ACCESS Testing
- EL students take the ACCESS test annually to assess English language proficiency and monitor progress in listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
- Once a student achieves the state-designated exit criteria of a 4.8 overall composite score, the student enters the "transitioning" stage, which means they achieved the score needed but will continue to be monitored to ensure the student's success.

- EL services can be refused or requested.
- OLCE Tutoring Program
- An after-school tutoring program is available to EL students starting with 2nd grade. The program is designed to provide additional support to EL students. At Hammond, students are divided up into 3 groups depending on their grade level: 2nd/3rd grade, 4th/5th grade, then 6th-8th grade. A teacher certified to teach bilingual students is assigned to work with each of the groups. Students can work on homework or classwork, and there are also computer programs for students to work with. If you are interested, please call the main office at (773) 535-4580 and ask for Ms. Rosado. The SY22-23 program ends on March 31, 2023.
